Lasik vision correction
Lasik ia surgical procedure to remold the cornea for rectification of
myopia, hypermetropia, or astigmia that implies the use of a
microkeratome to separate the surface layer of the cornea creating a
hinged flap offering access to the inner cornea where variable degrees
of tissue are separate by an excimer laser followed by replacement of
the corneal flap called also laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis.
Dr. Boothe: Are You a Candidate for LASIK Surgery?
-The eye has developed properly and matured, the ideal LASIK candidate is at least 18 years old.
-Have sufficient corneal thickness (the cornea is the trans-parent front part of the eye).
-A good candidate needs to have sufficient corneal thickness.
-Must understand the risks involved with LASIK surgery and have realistic expectations regarding the outcome
-A candidate cannot have severe refractive errors.
-A LASIK candidate may not be nursing or pregnant on the date of surgery.
-To be certain you are a good candidate for LASIK, schedule a
pre-operative consultation and eye exam by a qualified eye doctor or
refractive surgeon.
-Need perfect or near-perfect vision for careers, driving, or contact sports
The Non-LASIK Candidates
-Uncontrolled glaucoma
-If you have an autoimmune disease or some other type of major
illness or chronic condition, you may not qualify. This will depend on
what condition you have.
-Individuals with pupils that dilate beyond seven millimeters in the dark are not good candidates for LASIK.
-Suffer from an autoimmune disease
-Have diseases such as cataracts, advanced glaucoma, corneal
diseases, corneal thinning disorders (keratoconus or pellucid marginal
degeneration), or certain other pre-existing eye diseases that affect or
threaten vision.
-Amblyopia (wandering eye)
-Have unrealistic expectations. It is critical for candidates to
understand that laser eye surgery, as all surgical procedures, involves
some risk. In addition, both the final outcome of surgery and the rate
of healing vary from person to person and even from eye to eye in each
individual.
Dr. Boothe: More about Lasik
* Eye health - Within the last year you would need to have had no
eye infections or injuries. Any herpes infections in the eyes would
disqualify you, since a LASIK procedure could cause a recurrence of it.
* Millions of people have successfully undergone refractive surgery to improve their vision.
* Asthma - Asthma does not interfere with LASIK surgery, but some
of the medications prescribed for asthma may cause complications. The
most common problem that asthma suffers encounter with LASIK is dry eye,
due to taking antihistamines.
* A qualified and experienced LASIK surgeon would want you to understand fully what a LASIK procedure will do.
