We celebrate the jobs of the nation’s many school counselors busy at work doing jobs we don’t know they’re doing.
The end of National School Counseling Week marks the one week of the year we celebrate the jobs of the nation’s many school counselors busy at work doing jobs we don’t know they’re doing, according to Patrick O’Connor, Director of College Counseling at Michigan’s Roeper School. The week of February 6 to February 10 was officially declared National School Counseling Week by an act of Congress effective January 1, 2006. The American School Counselor Association, based in Alexandria, Virginia, promotes its observance. In an article posted on February 7 to the Huffington Post, O’Connor describes the job of a successful school counselor as: “When someone's life slips or they don't know where to turn, school counselors give them the space for grace and dignity to rebuild and strengthen their lives, all without fanfare. Sometimes, if you don't know we're doing our job, we're doing our job pretty well.” As an integral part of the nation’s education system, both public and private, school counselors are a vital part of the teaching staff. O’Connor says most school counselors work with 450 students or more - all at the same time! Most school counselors hold counseling degrees at the bachelor’s level but a masters in school counseling is required at the largest schools, at the highest rated schools where competition for jobs is keen, and in most private schools. Counseling degree programs are offered at most liberal arts colleges and those that specialize in teaching and education degree programs. When working through school counseling graduate programs, many students spend a great deal of time in the field, working directly for a school district and its students. Many counseling degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels are available online. O’Connor says it’s a common misperception that school counselors spend most of their time helping high school students apply for college but the job is much more complex than that. This reality is quickly confirmed by anyone enrolling in a counseling degree program. School counselors work with students of all ages, from kindergarten through high school and on throughout the college experience, too. It’s for this devotion to every student’s educational achievements and personal well being that we celebrate school counselors for the wonderful work they do, even if it seems invisible. And O’Connor says most school counselors were never trained to help students apply for college.
